Smell the Coffee: The Joy of a Deliberate Morning Routine

I am privileged to have a few morning hours before work. Such moments at the beginning of the day give me tremendous enjoyment and satisfaction.

You can tell a lot about a man’s life, success, and happiness from his morning rituals and routine.

And suppose there is one specific ritual that can independently predict a man’s journey. In that case, it might be your morning coffee drink or tea and how you prepare it.

I love to prepare my morning coffee or tea with fine attention to detail.

Choosing a fine cup of coffee over instant coffee is one way to revolt against consumerism and fast-food culture. That’s why I prefer to prepare my morning coffee in a more relaxed way.

I start by grinding a handful of coffee beans. My grinder does not come with a way to choose how fine to grind your beans. I set the time to grind each day with experience. I take a filled, ground coffee spoon. I do not measure the exact amount of grams here. I fill the coffee handler and press it with no fixed amount of pressure. I start the Expresso machine and count for 22 to 27 seconds for coffee extraction. Depending on the coffee’s volume, color, and creaminess, I stop the machine.

Later, I pour milk into the pot with an estimated equal volume to the coffee. I start frothing the milk until I feel the heat at the bottom of the pot. I then pour the milk over the coffee and add less than a small spoonful of sugar to the latte.

Can you imagine the number of details and variables at each step?

Every day, I look forward to my next great cup of coffee. It’s never perfect, and it’s never the same cup, but the beauty lies in the process of preparing. I surprise myself with a different cup of coffee each morning.

Preparing my coffee allows me to slow down and savor the moment while practicing the beauty of creating something new daily.

However, your morning does not have to be so complicated as preparing my coffee.

When we rush through our days, we often miss out on the simple pleasures right before us. We forget to appreciate the little memories: a simple conversation with our loved ones or a moment to listen to our daughter’s imaginary story.

Tomorrow, wake up 30 minutes earlier than your regular time. Sit quietly, grab a glass of water, sip it slowly, and comment here how it felt.
