Journaling Habit: How to start and keep doing it?

In my quest to keep up with my New Years’ resolution, I started a weekly journaling habit.

In 2020 I used my iPad and pen to write a digital daily journal.

Using a regular pen is liberating and more natural for me to express myself freely than the keyboard.

However, digital doodling makes storing private, secure, and searchable if you use tags. I used it for months and stopped for one reason or another. I can’t remember it now.

Later, in 2021, I used Notion for my daily journal. This time I made it more accessible. I created a table for the habits that I want to keep and habits that I don’t want to do. I ticked my bad and good habits daily.

As a result, I get a percentage for my ticked good and unpleasant habits that give me instant real-time reflection on my past performance.

This year I started a weekly journal using an actual pen and paper, in addition to my daily digital habit tracker.

Every Friday, I write my thoughts on the past week and my plans for the upcoming week. A weekly journal is a perfect time unit to use.

Why keep a weekly journal instead of a daily?

Easier

Having a weekly habit is much easier than a daily one.

Wider Perspective

Looking at your life using a weekly lens gives a broader perspective.

Gratitude

Even if you have a bad week, you certainly can have at least one good thing to remember.

Better Tracking

A weekly time unit is excellent to see if you are on track to keep your habits and if you messed up your week, you can catch up on the next one.

One last thing to motivate you and help you keep up with your weekly journaling habit is the environment. Here is the photo of my nightstand. It shows a book, my Kindle, and a journal.

Today my wife decided to move all my piled books and notes and keep it minimal. As a behavioral science enthusiast, two words jumped into my mind, choice of architecture.

Reply and tell me how you keep up with your habits.
