On the eve of 2022, I sat and reflected on 2021 and thought about my new year’s resolution.
I checked the goals that I accomplished moved what I didn’t to 2022.
I usually arrange goals according to domains such as personal, health, sports, religion, work, side projects, etc. Many of the goals are general, like for example to be a better parent, others are more specific, like reading 30 books.
This year I tried to focus on my list a little bit more to be easily remembered and more likely to accomplish.
However, it’s safe to say that life usually surprises you with new goals along the way that may end up better than the ones you planned for yourself.
So, whatever you plan try to be flexible, what you write is just ink or Bits in the RAM and not a Quraan or bible. You may change along the way.
This year’s plan is different. I will use what I call the 3-2-1 rule.
The 3-2-1 Rule
I do have one goal, let’s say it’s a vision for my professional career.
Two writing projects and lastly three habits.
The three habits that I want to establish and keep more regular are:
- Reading books including reading more Quraan (the holy Muslim book)
- Play and practice guitar
- Practice more sports
I do all the previous three things but not on a regular weekly basis. I want this year to use my behavioral science knowledge to its best and establish these three habits.
My year’s list is not right according to productivity gurus as my goal is not broken into smaller projects that are broken into small habits to accomplish, however, I will work on this later.
You can use the 3-2-1 rule loosely as I use it for now or use it more in a strict way.
A year of 3-2-1
- I want you to think of just one goal you want to achieve.
- Think of two projects that make you reach this goal. One project for the first six months and another for the next three months. You can start just one project for now.
- Think of three habits that can help you accomplish this project.
It’s nice to have a new year’s resolution, however it’s great to achieve it. Simplifying your goals using the 3-2-1 rule will make you proud of yourself by the end of the year.
